Imagine waking up one morning completely oblivious that there is anything wrong with your beautiful, healthy little boy, then being told the crushing news that your son might be autistic? This is exactly what happened to Jaypee and Victoria Abraham.

Talking about that day is still raw for Victoria and she has trouble holding back tears as she recalls the day she found out her son was autistic, as if it were yesterday. “Rylan was 18 months old when a woman at his day care centre suggested we take him to the doctors because he wasn’t responding to his name,” she says. “We knew all kids reach different learning milestones at different ages so we hadn’t thought much of it. He was our first child and we had no-one to compare him to, we just assumed he was normal.” Victoria says the woman at day care explained that if it was autism of asperger’s syndrome we would want to get it diagnosed early. Jaypee and Victoria admit they didn’t know anything about autism so came home and googled it and as soon as they read the symptoms they knew deep down that was what he had. “For three weeks we were numb and just cried. It felt like we didn’t know our child. We became more aware of his lack of eye contact and lack of interaction and it was if he couldn’t hear us,” Jaypee says. “When you find out your child is special needs you want a quick fix and you worry if this is forever, you want to know how it happened, how you can help your child and what services are available.”

It was a frustrating six months after the initial appointment with the paediatrician, but once Rylan had been diagnosed as autistic an Autism Advisor met with Victoria and Jaypee and explained all the services available to them and they were able to access government funding. Rylan started in the Early Intervention Program for Autistic Children at the Autism Queensland Centre within four months, and Jaypee says they were incredibly lucky after learning in Sydney there is a three year wait to get into the same program.  “Since starting the early intervention program, Rylan can now talk in simple requests and this has certainly made life a lot easier. Interaction can still sometimes be hard, but he is a good listener now and we have been taught how to talk to him in a simple sing song voice and how to keep routines,” Jaypee says. “But we can’t control everything and he also has to adapt and that means we have good days and bad days.” Victoria says Rylan has learned to talk through picture exchange and now adds the phrase “I want” to the front of words. His eye contact is better and he is a very affectionate little boy.

“When I fell pregnant with our second child I was paranoid that we would have another autistic child. I didn’t know what to do and what not to do because no-one really knows what causes autism. It wasn’t until our second son Ari was one that I started to relax,” Victoria says. “Ari started pointing, waving and talking and Rylan never did any of those things. It was a huge relief.” She explains that there is a higher chance of having a second child with autism, especially if they are a boy, and this was the reason for her concern. “Now Ari tries to copy Rylan and follows him around wanting to play with him. Rylan doesn’t know how to play and Ari can often try to annoy his brother on purpose, but Rylan is very patient with him. Rylan has a real innocence and purity about him,” she says. Like most autistic children, Victoria says Rylan does occasionally throw tantrums and have meltdowns when they are out and this can be hard for her as people can often be very judgemental. She struggles with the stares people give her as if she has a badly behaved child, and she says it can be hurtful. “Everybody wants to be the better parent and unfortunately they can often judge others too quickly,” she says.

Now pregnant with their third child which is due in June, Victoria says she is more relaxed this time round.  She says they are more confident and in control of the situation and are a lot more settled.  Rylan is a high functioning autistic child who will go to a normal primary school next year, and that will be a new chapter for the family. They say there is fantastic support in Cairns for families dealing with austism including the Cairns Autism support groups, Play Connect which is a playgroup for autistic children, facebook forums and the autism centre which Rylan attends.
